Piano Guys
Jul. 27th, 2012 12:07 amWe've been listening to Jon Schmidt for fifteen? years now. I don't remember how I found out about him, but I've been a fan for a long time. About the time we moved back from Germany, he'd gotten together with Steven Sharp Nelson and started posting some great videos on YouTube (now known as The Piano Guys). PMB learned to dance to their song Love Story Meets Viva la Vida. My 14YO has learned to play the piano on Jon Schmidt songs. My 10YO is signed up for orchestra, hopefully cello, in the fall, thanks to Steven Sharp Nelson. But this is the first time we've had a chance to see them in concert. They were great! There's something different about their stuff--I imagine reservoirs and oceans of creativity, just out of normal sight, but somehow they have the ability to open themselves completely and channel that so that the rest of us can experience it, too. They said that they often feel inspired when they're putting something together, that they don't feel they can take credit for all of it, that some of it is simply a gift from God--and I could feel that in their performance. They're very personable and funny, and the audience just LOVED the show. (They actually had two sold out performances today--and then stayed around to meet people and sign autographs afterwards. They must be exhausted!)
Besides the wonderful (beautiful! fabulous!) music, they'd heard of a local high school cellist whose mother is currently undergoing some extreme (and apparently expensive) health issues, who has not been able to afford cello rental. Her friends were trying to raise money for her, and a man heard about it and decided to donate his cello to her. Well, she didn't know any of this. She was enjoying this song with the rest of the audience:
Then Steven Sharp Nelson called her up and handed her the cello he'd just performed on. "It's used," he said. "If that's all right. But I can personally guarantee that it sounds excellent." He also announced that an anonymous donor had provided a year's worth of cello lessons. The girl was so stunned she could hardly move, just clutch the cello. It was all kinds of amazing.
So yeah. If you ever have the chance to go hear these guys: do it!!
