So, weeks ago we put in a work request to the property management company that we rent our house from. Some regular, things-wear-out sort of things, plus a request for someone to look at our electrical system. Since we moved in, we've had the downstairs circuit where our boys sleep trip about once a week. Hrm, hm, oh, it's probably just the fuse in the circuit box wearing out, they said. Not a problem. Many weeks go by. It seems they have new people in charge, because someone called me yesterday to say she'd just taken over the position and noticed we had an outstanding work request. Today we had someone come over (also a new person) to check things out. Fun times. First we had to figure out just what was on that circuit. Two bedrooms and a closet, annnnnd...the whole heating system. Yes! I don't know what the codes are in Idaho, but in other states, by law that has to be on its own circuit. Then there was the manhunt for the main fuse for the house. I had no idea such a thing existed, especially since we have a circuit box of switches, not fuses, but apparently you have both. The fuse is supposed to be on an inside wall away from water and condensation. Erm, yeah. It's inside the nonheated garage on an outside wall. The repair guy--who is not an official electrician but who has done a lot of electrical work--doesn't think it's the heater tripping things, as usually there are lights on that circuit for the heater closet. Ie, running the lights and a single alarm clock shouldn't be more than just running a heating closet light. But the outside-contact fuse...he was not not not happy about that. (And the circuit trips in the summer as well, when the heater is not on, and we don't have any kind of AC, so...) So it looks like we get to have an official electrician come out. When we moved in and went to have the gas hooked up, the  company wouldn't turn the gas on until we had an exhaust vent cut into the wall for the furnace. Which was an easy fix, but wires are in the walls. Sigh. I hope this doesn't involve tearing walls out. But I'm really glad someone finally took me seriously and had a look at it. I love the house, but I don't want us all to go up in flames, either.

It's still better than the house where the dryer vented into the attic and the fireplace was built with non-fireproof bricks, though...

ETA: The official electrician has come and gone. He has completely opposite ideas as the first guy. Fabulous, huh? He turned on everything possible that runs on that breaker, and measured the electricity going through it. Way lower than the max level. He opened all the outlets and peered inside. He did find that the outlet in the bathroom (which isn't on that circuit) is a regular one, and not the mandated safety one. But he couldn't find anything else going on. So...we're back to square one. This is why I didn't call earlier--because I hate it when you call and then everything works once it's under inspection. But after weekly occurrences for almost a year and a half, you start to think that something IS up. So now we're supposed to call the next time it happens. *Sigh*
