I tried entering a critique contest today and even though I sent in my thing at the moment it opened, I still got a message saying the contest was full (25 entries) and I hadn't made it in. Then I found out it was a computer glitch, and tried again. But this time, some kind of text or signature my e-mail program added kicked it over the word limit, and by the time I got that straightened out, the contest was full. I'm an alternate--but I'll probably still be watching from the sidelines. Sigh.

Still haven't found a place to live. I did see an ad for a cool house up in the mountains (12 miles from a tiny town as it is). It looks really nice--like a house in Alaska! It comes with a snowblower, skiing opportunities "right outside the door," and the owner recommends that anyone renting it have a 4-wheel drive. Fun, huh? I notice that there are a number of ads for places without any location added, just "east Idaho." Which is a big place.

So, books. Two things I'm growing weary of are 1) girls who can't decide which boy they're in love with, and 2) brooding male love interests who says lines like, "The most important thing is to keep you safe." It seems I've read an awful lot of books like that lately. One or two would be okay, but the levels to which it seems to occur doesn't seem quite proportionate with reality. The boys I know have smelly socks and think about things like food and fixing bikes and just doing stuff. Oh, I'm sure they want to keep their beloved ones safe. But I don't think they run around orating about it all the time. Like my husband says, guys obsess, sure, but they also neglect to tell people about it, even the person they should be telling. And as far as girls who can't decide who they're in love with, okay, so I've known some people like that, but since I've personally been very much a one-at-a-time sort of person, it's hard for me to relate. It can make for fun plot complications, sure--but I think there have to be extenuating circumstances that cause this sort of thing for it to be sympathetic. So, any recommendations of books where the guy is a little more real, and where, instead of a pedestal-protectorate situation, the MC and Love Interest go off and do interesting things together? The Blue Sword comes to mind. Others?
