Of moving in and (non) writing

olmueDon't you love it when you have a list of furniture you still need to replace and you walk into somewhere and see just what you need, in great condition, for just the right price? It even fit in my car, which was nice, as they don't deliver. We've been living out of suitcases since June, and it's so nice to have a dresser again! Now if I could only find a couple more low bookshelves. After checking all the thrift stores, garage sales, and furniture stores, I think I've resigned myself to the fact that I'm going to have to get horrible-quality Walmart shelves. Alas, even they are out, as the university starts up this week and incoming students are outfitting their apartments.
I'm supposed to be working on my draft but it's one of those days where every few minutes the phone rings or a two year old spills an entire serving bowl of cut watermelon (with seeds) on the floor or the school has sent home conflicting messages yet again and I don't have to go to a meeting after all--but I do have to pick up my otherwise-bused kid because they didn't let me know about the non-meeting until after my kid had already gone to school with plans to meet me there. So I end up clicking on the internet instead. Which is terrible, I know. I'm still excited about my WIP, although I need time to think about the hows of some plot movements. My characters are coming alive nicely, though.
Speaking of, the guy in front of me at Walmart looked an awful lot like one of my characters. Have you ever seen one of yours walking around and fought the urge not to stare?
I've now put 10 books on interlibrary loan/local purchase request. I hope the librarians don't get scared when they see me coming. :)

Date: 2010-09-08 10:17 pm (UTC)For the last two years our family has gone to camp, there's been a girl there who looks uncannily like my mental image of Rhosmari, the heroine of Arrow. She's almost the right age, she's biracial, her hair and build and features are near-perfect -- and she's even a fan of my books! All week I was itching to take pictures of her with my camera and turn them into LJ icons, but I was afraid of coming off like a creepy stalker, so I didn't.
I did tell her and her parents last year that she reminded me of my heroine, though, and this year I even showed her the cover. She was all excited -- "Is this the one who looks like me?" After all that I really hope she likes the book!

Date: 2010-09-09 12:07 am (UTC)In our last town we went to church the first Sunday and sat behind one of my characters, only aged to adulthood and with six kids. (!) But seriously, it was him!! In looks, ethnic background, even his job was related to my character's interests and abilities. Since he was well over six feet and built like a linebacker, I never said anything, though...
