Okay, this feels strange. ALL five of my kids are in school. This is the first time I've been alone (for more than a one-time afternoon sort of thing, I mean) in over FIFTEEN YEARS. I feel like I'm playing hooky or something.
Getting everyone to and from school, OTOH, is fairly heinous. There are no school buses. Well, there is a private company that is exceedingly overpriced, but no regular buses. If the start times were different, I could have the high schooler drop off the elementary kids on the way--but he has to be there before they do. Since we only live a couple doors down from the elementary school, it's hard to back out with all the school traffic (compounded by nowhere to make a 3-point turn, and a strange, slanting driveway and someone who parallel parks close to enough to the acute angle to be in danger of getting hit). The 10th grader could walk okay (it's less than a mile), but it does involve walking through a rough area, and when it's -30, well... The HS is in a high urban area and there isn't anywhere to pull off, so I really don't know how we're going to meet up after school today. The middle school has a school yard, but there is no organization whatsoever when it comes to picking kids up. It's a free for all, with cars driving every direction in the parking lot. Given that they have the space, someone should really at least make a traffic plan through here so no kid gets hit!! When I asked about it, the office told me, well, yanno, parents just do whatever. Um, yeah. There's way too much "whatever" going on there. Hopefully I manage to get all my kids without losing any or hitting anyone today.
Tomorrow should be even trickier because my 6th grader has orchestra at zero hour--about the same time my 10th grader is supposed to be at school across town.
In the meantime, though, I have a nap planned for this afternoon. And since I sewed curtains last night, I'm good for a while on that, although I should probably try to pare the boxes down a bit more. And there are my library books, and writing. But...wow. It's awfully quiet!
What did you do the day your last kid went to school?
