Today was one of those days where you really need something good to happen. We had frost a week ago and today was over 90 (no AC), and that isn't helping. And then I spent most of the day trying to find a place to live in North Dakota. Demand far outstrips supply, and even if money wasn't an issue (we are taking somewhat of a pay cut and moving to a place that's somewhat more expensive), there simply aren't many places at all for any price that will accommodate us. It's aggravating. There are a few houses for rent, but they are mostly in not very nice areas (people report frequent drug busts and breaking and entering, which is not where I want my children to live!). And there are small apartments. I can't fit two beds let alone three in a 10x10' room. Plus we have to sell our piano because pianos just don't move, and we're still sad about turning in the cello. And if we're in an apartment, then what do we do about the music? But a friend told me that practice mutes exist for the string instruments, so I'll have to pick some up. And then my husband called tonight for me to pick him up from work, and I needed to bring the dolly. I was a bit worried, but I went, and out he comes with...an electronic piano! It had been sitting in the library for years, and he and my SIL started asking about it. The library didn't want it and they tried to give it to the music department, who didn't want it. So it got sent to surplus. And guess who bought it? I was just looking at such things in case we needed to get a silenceable sort of piano for an apartment, and voila! (And much, MUCH cheaper!) So now we don't have to feel sad about selling the piano and we have a solution in case we have neighbors.
The other sad thing today (besides moving stress) was my visit to the dentist. I consistently have no cavities and they love my flossing, but I have a small crack in a tooth that, if it keeps up, will eventually result in a root canal. So next week I get to have it capped to prevent that. ARGH! But I'd rather have it done by my current dentist, who is excellent, than someone like my last dentist, who was overpriced and undercompetent. You have to take advantage of good things when you have them.
I also gave my revision to my neighbor to read. I needed someone who had never read the book before and who wouldn't overlook revision artifacts. Also someone who is just a reader and might respond on purely a gut level to some of the changes I made. We'll see. I've never handed something over to a non-writer/non-relative who I see face to face regularly. It's a bit odd to walk up and say, yes, I wrote this. But she's smart and she loves MG and is very articulate, and I can't think of a better beta reader. And then I'll send it back and hope I hit the right notes...
Well, this is all a bit random, but heat does that to your brain. Luckily it doesn't tend to last long here, and it's not humid. I could never survive in a place that's hot and humid all the time!!
