Writing

I have a bunch of cousins in New Jersey. I hope they're all right. I don't think my dad has heard anything from them--probably because they don't have power. I'm both very glad I don't live there anymore, and hoping the best for everyone. Because it's going to take a while to get things back to normal. We spent five days without power in an ice storm a few years ago, and it was like a sudden trip to the middle ages. When the power trucks showed up (borrowed from other states), it was like the hosts of heaven had arrived. And hurricane cleanup is like, 10,000 times more of everything than what we experienced.

In good stuff, though, the writing is coming along. The other night at about 1 am, I suddenly realized why my MC is like she is (I have a lot of plot but the MC was sort of unclear to me). Which meant getting up because if I tried to hold it in my head, I couldn't sleep. The next day, it still made sense, so I've started from the beginning to add all that in. It's going MUCH better now. Hopefully it will undo the block I was in 30K down the road. I really hope I can do the story justice. It's the sort of story where you just want to give your characters big hugs and maybe buckets of chocolate, because you know that a lot of things are going to happen and they will have to deal with a lot of things they'd really, really rather not think about. And no, I have no idea why I'm writing this particular story. But things come to you, speak to you, so you write them.

One thing I've learned from reading this week: it's er, pretty important to have an actual main character when you write a book. If you want readers to stick with it. It's also a good idea to have some character or other be, yanno, sympathetic. I know, there are exceptions--usually the books your English teacher wants you to read in school--but if you want people to LOVE a book, well. There's great literature, but sometimes people want to read about characters they wouldn't mind hanging around with in real life, you know? But hey, that book was something that author had to tell, and they did it and hopefully some good comes of it, too. Lots of books for lots of people, because nobody is quite like anybody else, and we all need books to speak to us.

Which hopefully means this book I'm writing has a place somewhere, too. free counter with statistics
