Voice

Voice is something I have to work on in writing, so I'm pleased to see that my kids seem to have their own voices naturally. Two of these are pictures and one is text.

Daughter 1 did this for Illustration Friday (which I should really put up, now that it's scanned...). The theme this week is Silent. The girl on the right is more generic, but the one on the left, who is being silent while the other girl is flipping out, definitely has her own look. It's a drawing style that my daughter is unconsciously developing.

silent

Here is what my 6YO was drawing on Sunday during church. I asked her um, what possessed her to draw that kind of expression (because you have to admit that it isn't what 6YOs normally draw--they are more smiles and kitties, not realistic faces). She said, Mom, that's how you feel sometimes. Tired! Er, it's true, yes--I have a 3YO who still does not sleep through the night or take naps. But I really hope I don't always look like this! I mean, check out the bags under her eyes! (not to mention the Cinderella outfit...)

tired

Then last night my 11YO had to stay up late to finish an autobiography project that was due this week. He's written scholarly articles before (the last time, a teacher wondered if it was maybe plagiarized...but in fact, that is really how he talks/thinks). This is an autobiography, though, and the voice is completely different. Instead of dry facts, he's got stuff like this: "After that, we moved to the United States. We went to Illinois first. That was when my sister was born. She liked being destructive. Every time I made something out of Legos, she would rip it apart while cackling with glee." His paper is full of details, some kid-appropriate exaggeration ("She checked in, and got a room. A few seconds later, I was born."), and even sensory things, like cold and touch.

I guess what I learn from this is to really look at things and don't just depend on your brain to fill in generic details.
