Dentist trips, doctor shots, and brake failure, oh my!

First, the good. Swimming lessons started this week. They're indoors, and last for 50 minutes at a time, five days a week. I think it's a good length of time, and because we're inside, we're not much bothered by the rain/hail that happens every day about that time. The girls are making good progress; the boys are...well, sort of back to where they started, but in a place with little to no pool access most of the year, you can't be surprised. Everyone is having fun, at least. And the 2YO (who isn't having lessons as the pool starts at 4 feet) hasn't run off yet. Although I'd prefer if he took a nap while we're waiting.

The not-so-good: Now that school is out, it's time for all those checkups we're overdue on. So yesterday meant taking all five kids to the dentist. Okay, so the 2YO didn't need a checkup, but he still had to be there--and it took TWO HOURS. PMB kept wanting to pick up and move the stools in the play area, which meant that there were some close calls between the legs of the stool and other people's kids' heads, but luckily no one got hit. And I rescued the artificial plant that er, got knocked off a table... I'm thinking I could hire out my kid to childproof pediatric waiting rooms. Most of the kids' teeth are mostly okay, but one kid needs a couple of fillings, plus something like five teeth pulled. His mouth is small and his permanent teeth have a tendency to grow through and splinter his baby teeth instead of actually pushing them out, so his mouth is full of tooth shards that shouldn't be there. But uh...while he knows he's getting some fillings, we're deliberately NOT telling him everything that's going down at the next visit. If we did, we'd never get him back there.

Also, I got to bring him and his brother for a physical today. Son 1 needed his scout physical sheet filled out, and son 2 had a massive migraine on Monday, and I wanted to ask about that. Basically the doctor suggested seeing a pediatric neurologist to check it out. And the boys were unhappily surprised that they needed some shot boosters. For some reason no one has ever mentioned the second chicken pox booster they somehow skipped, plus there were some regular boosters. I didn't have to pry anyone out from under a chair, but there was still QUITE a lot of persuasion involved.

Finally, the scary bad: my brakes failed on the way home from the doctor's today. Like, depress brake at intersection coming down hill, no brakes. So I drove the rest of the way home at like, 5 mph (sorry, people behind me) and listened to this horrible grinding noise from around the wheel near the driver when I finally stopped. Please pray we can get the car to the garage in the morning without an accident, because it was kind of terrifying to drive that way. And it's our only car.

In the meantime, swimming lessons are in a couple of hours. The pool is about 2 miles up the hill, and we do have bikes, but it's 46 degrees, with thunderstorms in the forecast. And DH just called to say that hail is hitting his office window (a couple blocks from the pool).

Can we just have a do-over today?
