Bear World
May. 4th, 2011 12:00 pmLittle Sweetie had a field trip to Bear World today. Parents and younger siblings were invited (for a WAY reduced price). A Fun Time Was Had By All. PMB couldn't decide if he liked the bus or the bears best--we all rode through the park in a school bus. They have elk and buffalo (both pretty common around here, so we've seen plenty before, plus my husband's relatives run an elk ranch). Also deer, a moose, various wild marmots, mountain goats, various animals in a petting zoo, a few wolves, and BEARS. The wolves look basically like dogs:

As to bears, they had a few grizzly bears and a whole lot of black bears. Bears change hair color so sometimes bears that are brown are actually black bears. In any case, most of the ones they had were black bears. They had us roll all the windows up when we went through the bear section.
Here's a grizzly, in a not-very-grizzled mood:

And here's a black bear. I'd say bears have a distinctive walk--they sort of hunch their backs and plod their feet. Sure, when they're running, they're a little more animated and stretchy. But they don't trot like a dog or horse, they're more awkward than cats, and they're not boxy like cows. This guy is just chilling. He looks like he's grinning to me.

At the end, they brought us to the bear cub area and held up a cub for us to pet. Bear fur feels slick on top but it's all bushy underneath, and it's a bit stiffer than dog hair (but not as stiff as pig hair, if you're comparing). As you can see, they were very cute!
