Cool! I won Orson Scott Card's new book, The Lost Gate, through a drawing at Tor.com. I feel like I've been unusually blessed in the books-coming-from-afar department, especially since moving here, and I'm very grateful to all the many sources of these books. I'm sure it will take a while to arrive; despite the fact that snow has not really been in the forecast for days, it has still managed to snow every day, and I'm just waiting for the post office to give up on trucks and hitch up reindeer and sleighs, instead.
I'm also reading a fabulous book on writing/revising. I'll be posting a review on it here later, but suffice it to say that it's probably the best book on the craft I've read. It dovetails with the personal research on voice (ie, authorial voice/style) I've been doing, as well as thoughts on deep revision, so my brain is sparking with ideas and I feel like I need extra canning jars around to keep it all so it doesn't go to waste.
All of this is good, because it's only January, and there are days when the endless winter starts to get old fast. My house lets in light fairly well, and with all the snow reflecting sunlight, it's not too dark, even on cloudy days. (I don't have SAD, so YMMV in Idaho. But everyone senses light levels to some degree.) The thing that makes me crazy, though, is just being trapped inside. I can drive places, but there are days when my body is just screaming for exercise, for a run around the track or even just a walk around the block. But that's not the sort of thing you can really do here in January, especially not with a 2YO in tow.
Spring: come soon!!
