How publishing works (mythbusting)

I know the what, three people who read this blog probably already know this, but in case someone interested in writing and publishing stumbles across this blog, I just wanted to clarify a publishing myth I hear every so often. That is, that you can't get a publisher without an agent and you can't get an agent without being published. That is not true. In fact, some publishers are open to unagented material (many picture book publishers, for example), and nearly all agents are open to unpublished writers.
