So our truck finally arrived and we went up to Idaho to unload it.

Wow. It's cold. 55 degrees as a HIGH today!! With a driving wind. (Apparently the wind never dies.)

It's really pretty. Like visiting Alaska. The valley where I-15 runs in Utah is overflowing with population (most of Utahns live right there). In some places it looks like a city without end, with wild on either side. In SE Idaho, particularly north of Pocatello, on the other hand, no matter how well built the houses, they look like they were just sort of set there. The Wild is truly wild!

When I was in college, the mom of two of my roommates (twins) was a park ranger in Yosemite. One summer I went for a couple weeks out to visit. It was maybe the most sensory vacation I've ever taken. I climbed Half Dome, I saw giant sequoias for the first time, I biked Yosemite Valley and found my favorite tree--the jeffrey pine--and enjoyed the wonderful smell of yellow pines. I spent time with wonderful people and I loved my stay. When it was time to go back to school, we drove out the eastern exit, which goes through Tuolomne. We hiked Lembert Dome, which is not very tall, but which puts you out of breath because of its altitude. It was such a lovely, lonely feeling being at the top, with a sea of pines all around, and hawks keening across the valley as the sun went down and the sky turned dark red. That night we went to bed with all our clothes on in the cabin of my friends' mother. It was very high up, and FREEZING, even though it was August. Well, eastern Idaho reminds me forcibly of that experience--so beautiful, so far away from anything else, and so cold! (Have I mentioned the temperature enough yet?)

We're in Provo (Utah) for the night, and even though the two states have much in common, it's a bit like being in a different country. MUCH warmer. Um--human beings! DH says Provo is like Lothlorian, and where we were would be Rivendell, the Last Homely House. So--watch this space for news from Rivendell.
