We're somewhere in Colorado (the flat part). I think we're going to go to Denver and take 80 over instead of 70 like last time. It was pretty! But a little terrifying. Maybe we'll try it again when we're not moving and the car isn't so full. But Robin, we'll wave as we go past Denver. :)

The moving van was supposed to come between 8 and noon, so naturally it didn't show up until 11:45. With some help from friends we were still able to get out of town that afternoon. We stayed with friends in Wichita and the kids had so much fun! The parents have both academic and children's book world connections, so it was fun for us, too. (And I no longer feel bad that I don't do reviews very often--the wife is a book reviewer and it was so interesting to hear how she reads--a lot differently from me--and we realized that reviewing and even editing, and writing, require some different mental processes. She doesn't reread, and has never had the experience of a character speaking to her. Considering I have a book on sub that I've revised no less than 17 times, I'd say you HAVE to be able to reread if you're a writer, and my characters definitely speak to me! On the other hand, she is particularly good at matching up readers with books. So I will leave the reviewing stuff to the professionals. :)

Anyway. Driving. The US is so big!! And there are so many empty spaces. I honestly don't know why so many people want to crowd into a tiny desert area in southern California where they have to truck in water when there are acres and miles of green grassland in the middle of the country. I know, jobs. But you'd think some industry that doesn't depend wholly on geography would get the idea sometime to start a branch in one of these empty areas that actually can sustain that number of people. They are giving away free land in the heartlands, folks. There's plenty of space! Plus, it smells lovely. A whiskery, grassy smell.

It might be a few days before I check in again (or not). Continue having a nice summer, and oh, good luck to Germany this weekend in the world cup!
