I have such a nice husband. When I woke up, he was chivvying kids out the door. I thought, that's odd, why are they all going to school an hour early. Apparently I don't even know how to tell time anymore. On the bright side, I got an hour of extra sleep!
So last night I took the kids in for scouts, etc., and was then faced with the rare prospect of an hour ALONE. So I thought, B&N is right next door, how about I browse during that time? So there I was, armed with my credit card, a hunger for books after boxing up all my own, and the rationalization that I need something to read for the next 5000 miles of travel, not to mention a mental list of all kinds of books I'm looking forward to which have recently been released.
And they didn't have ANY of them. Look, I'm not against the books they do have. But do we really need shelves and shelves devoted to one single author? Especially one most people have already read? Not to mention all the knockoffs. I HAVE THOSE BOOKS ALREADY. GIVE ME SOMETHING NEW.
Sure, I can order anything I want. But the whole reason to go into a brick and mortar store is instant gratification.
I wish there was a site where you could plug in your travel path and it would mark expansive, independent bookstores for you.
Luckily, my library-for-the-next-six-days seems much better equipped. I walked in yesterday to pay off all my library fines and found all kinds of books by people I know smiling at me from the new shelves. Thank you, library!
