brain is waking up
Oct. 27th, 2009 11:32 amWe sent son 1 to school today. Hopefully everything is going well. No one's called us yet, so it must be, right? But it's been days since he had a fever, his stomach is better, and ear infections aren't contagious. So we hope things clear up from here on out. I still have a cough and can't talk, but my nose is better, so I'm crossing my fingers and hoping... I did just sterilize the kids' bathroom that I hadn't walked into for a week--eek!!!! Now THAT was scary. And I think I'm knocked out for the rest of the day. :)
Actually, I need to be well because I have a pair of white sweats to make for daughter 1's costume. She wants to be a white cat--easy, right? Sew some felt ears on a white hooded sweatshirt and a feather boa on sweatpants for a tail, and you're done. Except that there are no white sweat pants anywhere. So I bought some fleece and once I've recovered from cleaning the bathroom I'll try to wing something. It can't be too hard, can it?
My brain is eager to get back into action. I read a book yesterday and realized how very different it is from anything I've ever written or am trying to write (even though it is roughly in the same genre), and it kind of woke me up to the things I like about the project I'm slowly putting together. This is an idea I got from a dream. I've changed settings and a number of other things, and I'm trying to solve all my whys before I write this time. Some more things came together last night in my head, and I'm starting to feel excited about it. At the same time, I'm starting to really figure out how I would revise the first book--not just scratching off skin flakes, but a deep Aslan-like peeling of the problem. I think that if people read the version I'm thinking of they would say yes! that's it. But if I asked anyone to describe what I need to do to fix it right now, they'd give me some cosmetics and the suggestions just wouldn't be right. See, you have to know your own writing. Critters are there to point out where things are breaking down, but the solutions come from yourself.
Also, I'm having a lot of fun with a black colored pencil and watercolors. Drawing is a complete hobby for me (even though I have been paid more for art than for words at this point--no, don't complete that thought). But that doesn't mean I don't want to improve and really understand illustration. I think I've found my medium for illos. If you look at this colored pencil drawing (admittedly on the wrong kind of paper) and then at this or this, you'll see what a difference it makes when you get the color right!
Okay, I'm off to pick up Little Sweetie from playgroup. Have a healthy day!
