random questions for a Wednesday morning
Jan. 14th, 2009 09:32 am1. Have any of you ever actually been picked to review a book for HarperCollins' First Look program? I've signed up a number of times, but they've never sent me a single book. There's one I would really, really, really love to review on there right now. They want you to say why you want to review the book--on one of them I felt particularly qualified (it had to do with a place and situation I was extremely familiar with). Others, I've just been more fangirl-like. But maybe it's totally random? They just pick your name from a virtual hat?
2. Why do some babies not sleep? At all? Lap Boy--man. He goes to bed when I do, wakes up when I do, and seriously doesn't nap for longer than 15 minutes. He HATES tummy time, back time, whatever--all he wants is for people to hold him standing up so he can look at things--out the window, at the computer, up at the mirror... And he LOVES to whack Mommy's toy (ie, the laptop keys). His switch is set on permanent play mode. Maybe it's having all those older siblings, but seriously, it's like he wants the circus to come every day. I am not a high energy person, but it appears I have somehow produced a high-energy child!
3. Facebook. I'm not on it. I've been getting "requests" about it in my spam folder lately, though. I assume someday I'll join, but at the moment I don't have a lot of excess time, and I'd rather use what I have for writing. So maybe my questions are utterly stupid, but is it like a blog, or like a people-finder? (If you aren't signed up you can't really view it.) You put up a photo of yourself with your real-life information, right? Isn't that a little...I don't know, non-private? Does it say where you are? Or can you have a certain layer of anonymity? Someone at Verla's posted a link where you could search for people on line... I was a little alarmed that not only can you find a person, but a huge number of their relatives that way. I realize if you pay bills you are probably on line, but linking people's relatives goes too far, IMO.
4. I've stumbled on a song that seems to address one of my character's inner needs. No doubt my kids are getting sick of hearing it, but I'm trying to work on that thread in the book, so I've been playing it often as I try to think things out. I'm not a person who can play a lot of music when I write (this part is revision, so it's going better.) Will I ever be able to listen to this song again without being dragged into the book? I doubt it.
