The good thing about living right smack next to the community center is that you're right here for all the events. The bad thing is that you're right here for all the events. It looks like the summer festival is still going on. (There was a competing one at the elementary school all the kids here are zoned for earlier in the day, so it looks like things are only just now starting up here.) Right now there's a live band right outside my bedroom window. (9 pm) We actually bagged on both events to go to a snacks and board games night at church because even though it wasn't his idea, DH ended up with some amount of responsibility for it (which he delegated, not feeling well himself. Son #2 got sick halfway through, so the two of them went home early, and I stayed with the kids who actually do like games. They had a fun time.

Anyway, tonight is Turkey vs. Croatia, and I wouldn't mind taking my knitting and watching the game--only, I know that if I turn on that TV, nobody will go to bed. I'm assuming that if I can hear over the live band, we will also hear fireworks for each of Turkey's goals. Turks represent the largest minority population in this country, and this evening the town is draped in red flags with white stars and crescents. It would be interesting if Germany and Turkey ended up playing each other. Barring that, Turkish Germans sort of have two chances to "win."

Oh, it was also cool to see all the teenagers and kids show up tonight covered in schwartz, rot, gold (black, red, gold, the colors of the German flag). Apparently this is new since the world cup two years ago, but they said that everyone at school was dressed like them. My Austrian friend and I thought it was nice that for once they could really feel patriotic.

ETA: I found a way to watch the game on line (Arabic commentary, so I turned the sound off.) I am now out of yarn (again). And we're over halfway, and no one has scored a goal yet. Hm. This game is kind of boring. Hopefully things will pick up once Germany gets involved with the winner of this match.

ETA2: Turkey won, after double overtime, with 3 shoots against one (however you call it). So, we will be playing them next. Should be interesting.

There go the fireworks.
