Salzburg

This is where I was today:



Yes, those are the Alps!!

Unfortunately, the weather was rainy/cloudy the whole time, so I took this from the train on the way out of Salzburg today. While we were there we couldn't see much of the mountains.

I just got back, am totally exhausted, and am uploading pictures. And tomorrow I have to clean my house because people will be coming over to play with my daughter. But I'll post pictures soon.

The short of it is: if you have the chance to go to Salzburg, go!

Salzburg--more

One of the things we wanted to do was actually be on a mountain the Alps. When you have a 3-year-old and you are 7 months pregnant you just can't hike like you used to--so we took the cable car to the top of the Untersberg, which is just outside of Salzburg. It sits on the border of Germany and Austria, and I can't tell you which country we were in when. But, probably Austria, since there was a cloud sitting on the mountain and we could see basically nothing except for spitty whiteness. I'm not sure it it was better to see or not--hanging thousands of feet in the air suspended in a cable car is not for the faint of heart. My oldest decided we'd gone the limit in this trip to conquer our fear of heights. At the top, the kids basically just held on to the rocks and were scared to move. I'm sure it's a lovely view when there is a view.

Salzburg

On our way back down the mountain, there was this strange event going on, a celebration of the Schutzverein (local protection club??). They were setting off cannons and shooting every few minutes. I have no idea what the significance of the fresh oak leaves in the helmets is. Maybe this is something you do every Frohnleichnam (Corpus Christi)??
