quiet places in your mind
Apr. 13th, 2008 07:25 amMy kids had an unexpectedly long playdate yesterday. It was really quiet around here. Almost too quiet. I got some things done that I needed to do, but once it gets dark and your kids are still out, it's hard to settle into that relaxed and private zone for writing. (And the fact that I fell asleep over the laptop in the end didn't help, either.) So, both good and less-effective things about yesterday.
On the other hand, I woke up (well-rested) an hour earlier than I needed to this morning, with my mind in the that stem-cell-like state where anything is possible and ideas can easily make the connections I need and turn into the the elements I want. Unfortunately, the fact that my eyes were open meant that everyone else rushed out to talk to me. And now I've got to get ready for the day. I'm trying to hold on to that feeling, though, because if I look at my opening chapter like that, well, it's going to be a much stronger chapter than the one I have now.
I wish some time we could actually see a house before we agreed to live in it. My dream house some day is going to include a) a private master bathroom so if my bladder wakes me up at 5 am, I don't wake up all my kids, b) a room off the flow of traffic where I can sneak to when I wake up earlier than other people and need to write.
Of course, all those other requirements are still there--a full-sized washer and dryer in my actual living quarters, and more than one toilet, no matter what the arrangement. But I just wish I had a place where I could occasionally have quiet space around me.
Okay, gotta go--the day is starting for real, and I've got a talk (in German), another bilingual teleconference, kids to stuff into clothes, a bus to ride, and people to talk to in a variety of languages (maybe three, if the Argentine-Paraguayan couple I met at church a few weeks ago are back in town). I hope you all have a great Sunday!
