Do trees feel pain?

They're building a new kindergarten right behind my building on what used to be a field. Usually this means keeping the back windows closed because the nice double-paned German windows keep most sound out. But even that is not helping today, because today they chopped down three massive poplars. It is very sad. Now it just looks like a wasteland. There are still other ones further up the road, but now what will blow cotton onto my drying laundry in the spring? What will shade us from the summer sun? (No AC here) What will we look at out the window? Waa.
