the weekend--random
Nov. 25th, 2007 03:38 pmSoooo tired, and now I've got to plan a birthday party. I actually just want to pull the covers over my head and sleep. I woke up early after a dream in which I had taken public transit through a dangerous part of town (my real town isn't dangerous) to get to a large, outdoor expo sort of event with my family and neighbors. Unfortunately, I got separated once I got there, and ended up in a "hospital" where crazy people amputated healthy people's body parts to study them. This one woman with a giant pair of scissors kept following me, and although I finally found my mom and friends, I was on edge the whole time trying to convince the crazy woman not to cut us all up. Um, yeah. Maybe I need to change my bedtime reading habits or something. I swear I wasn't reading anything terribly wild or violent, though!
Speaking of reading, they had reading aloud day at kindergarten on Friday, so I got to go and read to whatever kids were interested. My littlest got to come (actually, she cried when it was over and didn't want to leave), and my older daughter was excited for Mom to be there. The kids were all curious what language I was going to read in, and relieved when I said German. Here's what I read:
Where the Wild Things Are/Wo die wilden Kerle wohnen
Hansi Schlumpfenbergers Weihnachtsgeschenk, by John Burningham, a story about Santa's efforts to get one forgotten present to a boy he overlooked--the reindeer have gone to bed so he has to do trains, planes, and automobiles to get there and back
Baker's Cat, by Posy Simmonds--almost a pb graphic novel with a VERY mean villain and a great little plot!
The Magic School Bus, the solar system one (I didn't think they'd be interested, but they were)
Frog in Love, by Max Velthuijs--if you haven't read any of his books, you should.
Olivia Saves the Circus, by Ian Falconer
Mein Haus ist zu eng und zu klein, by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler (authors of Room on the Broom). I love the eyeballs on Scheffler's characters!
Dieser Hase gehoert Kathi Braun!--about a princess who wants to steal Kathi Braun's teddy bear because it's "real"--and Kathi Braun has to tell her how to make her own toys "real"
I'd only planned on reading one or two, but they kept asking for more, so an hour later I finally wound it all up. I like reading aloud, even if it has to be in a foreign language.
Then that night we went to a taco dinner that some Americans put on for Germans in the area. It was very entertaining, because Germans don't know what tacos are. They gave instructions for eating them right at the beginning, and the Germans all found it very interesting.
I also went to a town called Schweinfurt (Pig Fort) today. It's right next to a town called Hassfurt. (Hate Fort) What is it with town names in this country??
Anyway, I hope things calm down for a few days. I've been carrying around the first section of my WIP to make revision comments to myself (no, the draft isn't close to being done, but I'm working on some structure stuff so that the end, when I write it, matches the beginning--writing a novel is just plain HARD, you know? Enjoyable and rewarding, but hard.) I'd like to dig back into it and get some things worked out. I hope you're all having a nice weekend, and that you are alternately getting a lot done, or are relaxing so you're refreshed to get a lot done in the week!
