graphic pbs and birch pollen
Apr. 21st, 2007 08:36 amIf you're looking for a good picture book with a plot and characterization and almost a graphic novel feel to it, here's a good one: Baker Cat, by Posy Simmonds. The baker in the story is really mean! And the solution the cat finds (or rather, the mice) is great. I found this in our library stacks after passing over pb upon pb of new baby, toilet training, and going to sleep books. (Most of which are 1000-3000 words long, by the way. What child that age can sit still that long, I wonder?) Another pb with almost a graphic-novel feel (sort of sketchbooky) is Alison Lester's Are We There Yet?, a book about Australia. And because I like this kind of style (as opposed to manga), I'm looking forward to the MG graphic novel Ellie McDoodle, Have Pen, Will Travel, by Ruth Barshaw, coming out May 1. I've only seen a single spread from it, but it looks good, plus I've met Ruth, and she's a very humorous person.
Got a partial request this week, just in time for my printer to die. I hate when that happens. I've been trying to work on my WIP, but that means I need more than 60 seconds' worth of uninterrupted time, which has just not been happening lately. It's time to sit down and think about back story I've been hinting at so far, and I can't really get any further until I work that out.
Also, birch pollen is high right now, and ugh, I'm allergic. Not just my nose--my whole face has broken out in hives. Lovely. Aside from those people plant for decoration, I haven't lived in a lot of places in the US with birches, but they abound in central/northern Europe, and lots of people are allergic to them. It turns out there' s a connection between birch pollen allergy and allergies to hazelnuts and stone fruits. And carrots. And apples. Weird, huh? But it explains why my mouth goes all itchy whenever I eat raw carrots, and why raw hazelnuts, especially with skins on, do the same thing to me. (When you cook them, it breaks down the allergy-causing protein.) I just wish the pollen would hurry up and do its thing and go away, because it's hard to think when you can't breath and your skin is itchy.
Okay, I really MUST sit down and work on this WIP!
