random things

1. Okay, Turkey has got to be one of the coolest places for archaeology, and people barely ever talk about it. Check out this article. These are standing stones they found in Turkey that are more than three times as old as Stonehenge. Not to mention the interesting site of Nemrut Dagi (also here). Or check out these cave houses in Cappadocia.

2. Um, in real life (er, sorta) news, my front story and back story are starting to mesh! It is going very slowly, but it feels a lot more solid. (I'm talking about the WIP).

3. My nose is drying up. Yay!

4. Lap Boy just learned to do the inchworm move. He is FAST. He also is so excited about it that he doesn't really want to sleep. Are we surprised?

5. Does posting your door with "no soliciting" really work? We've had a record number of people trying to hock us things since we've been in this house, and I'd like to try it. A youngish person tonight tried to sell me a newspaper subscription. We already get three that I don't have time to read in their entirety. I am worried about a precarious job situation, and her best argument was that if I would only relent, she could go to Six Flags for the first time ever. Um. I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade, and I'm not even irritated at the girl. But I am annoyed at the marketing techniques of the newspaper. I stuck a sign on the door after she left. We'll see if it helps.

Oh, come on. Let her go to Six Flags. Seriously, I hope the sign works.

I'll help her go to Six Flags if she'll pay my grocery bill this month.

LOL -- exactly what you should have said to her ;)

Oh dear. I've taken to griping every time the pizza commercial (don't even remember what company it is) tries to advertise with their "cheese stimulus package." Because with the economy and the job market the way they are, I don't find their commercial clever or amusing. And I am not sympathetic to that girl wanting to go to six flags.

Yeah, I think some people really don't have a grip, even now, what other people's economies are like. Sometimes ten bucks isn't much. Sometimes it's dinner for your kids. I don't mind sharing with those who have less than me, but that's a far cry from throwing away money for things I don't want and can't afford. And I hate to feel pressured to do so!

Our entire neighborhood is a 'no soliciting' neighborhood...but we still get the random solicitor now and then. However, I've also known various neighbors to call the police on them too (which is why they're random -- I think word spreads).

Well, I was sorely tempted to add a list of what "no soliciting" means (ie, we don't buy cleaning products, overpriced candy, plastic coloring sheets, educational books, special AT&T bundled services, or even--gasp!--newspapers from door to door salespeople, no matter how sad your story is). A lot of the people are high school/college aged, and I know they are just spouting the spiel they were taught. Still. I have no money and I hate to tell people no, and no again. Hopefully it works!
