For those of you who might be sad you missed the biker festival:

Adding to my collection of interesting manhole covers:

P1210377

And introducing the Osage orange, one bizarre fruit (inedible) from this area. First is my 8-year-old's foot next to it, to give you a size reference:

Growing in the tree (I'd really hate to be down below when this thing falls off):

P1210375

And how it looks broken open:

That Osage orange IS certainly odd!! But those are the sort of bizarre details I love. Writers give the best reports when they travel or move anywhere... ^_^

It does look like something out of a SFF novel, doesn't it?

I've never seen anything like that orange before.

It's mostly an Ozarks and area radiating out from here phenomenon. Weird, aren't they?

The line of bikes reminds me of that scene in an early Woody Allen movie (I think it was) when there's a row like that and one is bumped and they fall like dominoes.

Osage orange--I always wondered what they looiked like.

Wow, that is some weird fruit! Can birds eat it, at least?

Well, it has latex sap in it, so it's not very appetizing. I read that prehistoric American horses (ie, before the ones the Spaniards brought over) used to eat it, as well as extinct ground sloths, and maybe mammoths and mastadons. Occasionally modern horses will encounter it and eat it. But mostly, it's food for extinct species.

The wood is supposed to be excellent for bows (as in arrows), though. Hm. Another extinct use.

Cool! I forgot about Osage oranges (though I didn't know what they were called.)

Love the bike and manhole shots too. :)
