Beartooth Highway

My SIL has long wanted to drive the Beartooth Highway, only she didn't want to actually be the one driving, so since it was about as much daylight as we are going to get, we picked yesterday for it. Oh. My. Holy. Heart Attack. That is one beautiful and terrifying road. I don't have a problem with heights when I'm on my two feet, but there's something petrifying about being in the passenger seat and knowing there's six inches between the tires under you and certain death three thousand feet over the edge.
It starts when you leave the NE entrance to Yellowstone, which was beautifully foggy yesterday.

Basically I would recommend this drive only if you do not have height issues. It's like some drunk engineers got together one night and decided, "How cool would it be, man, to build a road OVER THE TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN! Whoa, dude. Let's do it!" If you do drive this, be well warned that vehicles over 40 feet long are not recommended, and that your camper probably won't fit. Yes, we saw some. But the chance for fatal accidents with something that wide is...not a chance I'd be willing to take. If you're cool with hairpin turns, on the other hand, it's gorgeous, and by all means, enjoy!
