Writing!

I took off yesterday after writing only minimal words and just read a book. I'm close to the end of the book (43K, heading into the final complication), and let's just say that there is only so long you can steep yourself in teen angst (on top of living with actual teenagers) until you need a break! So I took advantage of maybe the Last Nice Day and lay down in the sunlight and read Rae Carson's Crown of Embers, which was a highly excellent distraction. I'm glad to see fantasy making a comeback in YA. And Elisa is a good character--she's definitely not some winsome beauty or blank slate in love with two supernaturals or whatever. She's an imperfect person who's so aware of her imperfections, but she works hard to cover it and rise to the destiny laid on her.

Anyway, taking a break was apparently a really good idea. I wrote some 3400 words today. I think 3800 is a record for me, so that was not bad. My book has nothing to do with fantasy or destiny or swordfighting, but I think it was good to read something else, both to remind me what a book is supposed to be like when it's read at normal speed, and also just to have a break from having to figure out how it ends! My book will need sooooooooo much revision, but if I can keep that thought at bay, I'll be able to finish it and then tackle some of the other stories in my head. Um, but maybe I'll get some sleep first. My agent told me to dive in and just write those characters that keep me up at night. I think the characters took her literally...

I'm probably done writing for today, though. The high school has a play tonight, and the kids know several of the performers. So we're going. The older four are excited. I just hope the Little Person Who is Four can handle sitting that long.
