Currently reading Brandon Sanderson's newish book The Alloy of Law. What's cool about it: first, it takes place in the same universe as his Mistborn books, only many hundreds of years in the future. So there's electricity, and trains, but technology like that is still emerging. Oh, and it's kind of like a western, only with fantasy, so that's different. The other thing I really like is that Sanderson has given his main character, Wax, a friend (Wayne. Er, yes, that's really his name.) A lot of books just focus on the main character, alone and separate from everyone else, and maybe the love interest. But most people don't really exist in a vacuum like that, so it's kid of refreshing to have this funny sidekick. I like the interactions between them; it sparks the story and gives it a lot of life.

Overall, it's looking like a busy week. My now 7YO had a birthday yesterday, and today my friend from Germany/Chile is coming. (She was coming yesterday, but there was a snafu with the bus. Hopefully it all works out today.) We've spoken by phone, and I'm relieved that I could still talk in Spanish, so that's good. Tomorrow I'm supposed to help teach art, which took me by surprise, because I feel like we were just there, and we couldn't possibly have TWO art events in February. But did you know that Feb. actually has five Wednesdays this year? Weird. I guess I'll bring my friend, and she'll get to see what an American elementary school is like. Not something most tourists see, I would guess... The weather is looking good for the rest of the week, though, so maybe we'll be able to get out and see something interesting while she's here. Yellowstone doesn't work, but maybe Grand Teton? They do plow the main roads up from Jackson. (Of course, that still involves driving over Jackson pass, which sort of puts my hair on end even in summer...)
