Man, I can't get Japan out of my mind. The video footage is terrifying. Praying hard for all those people there.
My crit group is doing a voice workshop this week. We've set it up so we all have to not only read stuff, but talk about it, find examples, do some writing of our own. I find I learn so much more when I actually have to explain stuff myself than I do just reading and receiving it. I'm learning a lot this week! Plus, I feel like every book I pick up I notice stuff about voice. Yesterday I read NOTES FROM THE MIDNIGHT DRIVER, by Jordan Sonnenblick. Sonnenblick's got a fabulous voice. I think one reason we love good voice so much is that it goes past polite surface niceties that don't mean much and punctures you to the core. It makes you feel. And that's one of the biggest things people read for.
Speaking of voice, I've been having a character talk in my head lately. I don't know how far this story will go--some start out well and fade, others plow right through. But I'm amazed at some of the things I'm realizing about him. It's spooky, writing. Like there are people and stories all around, and sometimes we have the good fortune to be chosen to tell one, to help it be born into this world.
