Random writing/reading
Dec. 9th, 2010 10:45 am1. Sometimes writing is really random. I have three kids and a mentally-impaired adult stuck in a cell, with limited materials to get them out. One of them is a vial of cotton balls. DH got excited when I mentioned that and suggested I look into gun cotton. Well. I'd never heard of nitrocellulose before, but apparently it's what early motion picture film was made out of. It's extremely explosive and it's why sometimes film would catch on fire and burn down theaters (Cinema Paradiso, anyone?). It's also a component of home pregnancy tests! So uh, be careful out there...
2. Meanwhile, in the midst of trying to research ways out for my characters, my 2YO is on a Little Drummer Boy kick (thanks to the Fisher Price Christmas barn), and wants YouTube videos of the song, over and over. We've gone from Celtic Woman to Toten Hosen to John Denver arrangements. It's an uh...interesting soundtrack to be running while researching.
3. Having kids really expands your reading interests. My 5YO just told me she likes realistic stories best. My mom loves math and hard science, so naturally my sister and I are fantasy lovers all the way. I've done a lot of speculative fiction readalouds to the kids, but it looks like I need to pick up more realistic stuff as well. Little Sweetie is loving the Little House books and The Penderwicks. She's also been asking me to reread Palace Beautiful to her. I have a feeling she'll like The Healing Spell a lot. Meanwhile, silly boy MG books are really starting to grow on me. I'm really looking forward to Christmas and getting to read all of their very different books when they're done!
