Fun with Word 2007
Having just completed a revision, I thought it might be fun to compare the current version with the original. You can do that in the Review function of Word 2007, and it shows you all the original stuff you deleted, as well as all the new stuff you inserted, as well as all the untouched stuff that has carried through all the changes.
Well. I knew that a lot had changed because my outtakes file is now as long as my current draft. But the Word markup really shows the difference! Between the very first and very last version, there's basically just one scene that is largely untouched. Other than that, you have to go pages and pages and pages (like ten at a time?) before finding a remaining word or two. I wish there was a way to find out what percent remains, but seriously, it's like a few words here and there, except for that one scene.
Strangely, even though I've changed so much, it feels much more of the story I meant to tell than ever.
And now, see that PMB has emptied his brand-new box of diapers, which means that between cleaning that up and sorting some boxes for moving purposes, my brain should be otherwise occupied today. (Side note: I HATE MOVING!! I am in quite a bit of denial, even though logically I know I should have done a lot of things by now. I have a storeroom full of stuff that we've been moving from place to place and it's Got. To. Go. but if I start, not only will PMB have a heyday when my back is turned--I caught him trying to pour his own milk into a sippy cup yesterday, frex--but I will then have to acknowledge the fact that yes, indeed, I am moving.)
