Happy Valentine's Day!
Feb. 14th, 2010 05:58 pmNot sure if the candy we ended up with is exactly contributing to general fraternal love and getting-along-with-each-other-ness... Plus, Son 2 (who is 9), announced that he thinks he's done with "junior chocolate" (that would be cheapo Palmer brand, etc.). He's ready to move on to "the professional stuff" (ie, 65% dark origin, Moser-Roth brand (German brand from Aldi), etc.)
Yesterday I took the kids to see the Percy Jackson movie. We are all PJ fans around here, and the movie did not disappoint. It was different from the book, sure, but it held together really well. I couldn't remember all the details since I hadn't read the book in a while, but I didn't find myself critiquing as I watched, which is always a good sign. I thought the kid playing Percy really captured his character--he comes from a loser background but really rises to the challenge and becomes a hero. Annabeth was a bit old, but okay, and Grover was funny. My only distraction (since I don't see many movies, and usually I've never seen the actors in anything else) was that Zeus =Boromir.
I'm going over my opening chapters again, trying to get enough information in without adding too much to my word count. It's so hard to get the right balance of enough backstory but not overkill in the first couple chapters. On the one hand, I keep despairing that I'll ever find a home in print for this story, but on the other hand, I really believe in it. There has got to be a way to make it live...
