Random stuff on Sunday
Jan. 17th, 2010 05:02 pmMy kids find it creepily ironic that the American Association of Librarians (ALA) are having their annual conference right now. They've read Brandon Sanderson's Alcatraz books (in which the world is controlled by Evil Librarians who are seriously scary). And yes, their future reading choices at school are no doubt in the hands of those people at this very minute! But hopefully it will be for good, not ill. :)
Speaking of the kids, the boys are rather quiet about school. They came home on Friday announcing that Son 1 was in the geography bee (the representative from his class?) and that Son 2 won the election making him a student council representative. None of them have ever expressed interest in that kind of thing (let alone mention he was running), so I was surprised, but hey, it should be a fun experience. He is supposed to be at school at 7:30 once a week so he can read out the Spin the Globe section of the morning announcements. This should make getting everyone to school at different schools rather tricky, but I assume we'll figure it out.
Reading Siobhan Dowd's Bog Child right now. I have to say, the whole contemporary Irish setting (written from an Irish POV) takes some getting used to. I find it harder to find my way around than reading something English. The setting, the school, the political situation (I'm familiar with the basics, of course, but not all the acronyms of various organizations and law enforcement people), even the slang--yes, it's the same language as my own, but well, not quite. Still, the book looks promising.
Back to son 1, he was ordained a deacon today. Now that he's 12, he goes in with the teenagers at church, which means he gets to do a lot of fun things. There's kind of an age gap between him and the next older boy (and a HUGE size gap--my kids are short!). One thing I really admire about him, though, is that he's pretty fearless. Public speaking? No problem. Jump in with a bunch of teenagers, even though there are fourth graders bigger than him? No problem. Learn new skills he may not be good at yet because he's never tried those things? Hey, no problem. There's no sense being self-conscious--life's this big adventure where you learn stuff as you go.
Okay, daughter 1 wants me to read more Harry Potter, so I'm signing off. Have a lovely day, everyone!
