Happy er...January 19...
Jan. 19th, 2009 09:01 amToday is the official observance of Martin Luther King's birthday. Tomorrow the first non-white president of the United States will be sworn in. The concurrence of these two events into the same constellation is nothing short of portentous; we are making history and by golly, all of us are witnesses to a major step in the healing of this nation from its background of racism and injustice. Guess what was the sole topic of the editorial page today in the Arkansas Democrat Gazette?
Robert E. Lee's birthday.
Nooo kidding.
Look, I get it that he was a nice guy and even the opposition respected him as gentleman and all, but HELLO, this is 2009 and he is DEAD and he was fighting for slavery, people! Can we move into this century?
