Rules: Answer the questions, add one of your own if you want, then tag five of your friends.

1. How old were you when the craft of writing called you to perform?
Maybe 3? I made my mom staple pages together and then drew the pictures. Then I dictated to my mom (who says I refused any editorial suggestions). Most of the books were about mice, proud big sisters, and beautiful baby sisters (I was the oldest). Then in 4th grade, Mrs. Brackett told me I could write. That's when I realized that not everyone wrote stories, that it was a strength of mine, and that I wanted to publish something. (Obviously I'm a slow learner...)

2. What's your favorite writing outfit?
Jeans and a t-shirt

3. What computer program do you use for your writing?
Microsoft Word

4. What's the name of your most difficult character to write?
Lily. Because I know what's in her head but sometimes what is clear to me is not clear to others. And then maybe Andy. He doesn't like to spill what he's thinking very often.

5. When is your favorite time of day to write?
Mornings after breakfast but before anything else. Since mornings after breakfast I'm driving people all over town and then grocery shopping or cleaning or something equally onerous, I don't get to write at that time very often.

6. What's your favorite genre?
Books with solid, real characters who have real issues, but with exoticness to them--so, fantasy, mystery, historical, interesting locales, etc. My least favorite are books with no story/plot, and contemporary problem novels that make you think but kill your hope.

7. What writers have inspired you the most in your career and why?
Madeleine L'Engle and Gordon Korman, because they wrote back to me when I was a kid.
Shannon Hale, because she writes lovely books and seems to somehow keep her life in balance, and is cheerful.
The writers at Verla Kay's board, both published and not yet published, because they are so interesting, encouraging, and positive. As well as being great writers!

8. Do you think you're smarter than a fifth grader?
Maybe we should ask my fifth-grader... (Since he reads Slashdot and I don't, I think you can guess what his answer would be. I do know more languages than he does, though, unless you count math.)

9. What's your favorite thing to do when you're stuck on a scene?
Go on an Ausflug (field trip) to a really interesting place with my family (such as a cave, forest, ruin, castle), equipped with plenty of good German chocolate.

10. If you could give one piece of advice to your fellow writers, what would it be?
Ignore any advice that says, "This is the only way to do it!" Because it isn't. And--there are some of you whom I MUST see in print--so don't give up!!!
