DH's German lesson today
Oct. 7th, 2008 08:24 pmOnce upon a time in 1844 a nice doctor wanted a book to give his kids for Christmas. Unfortunately, when he wandered around the bookstore, all he found was annoying, moralistic books. So, he decided to fill a hole in the market, and write something fun and entertaining. He worked in an insane asylum, and he noticed when kids didn't want to talk to him, he could draw them out by telling them a story and drawing pictures. He decided to write and illustrate his own book. This is it.
Man, I hope my books age better than this!
ETA: The course is on Grimms' fairy tales, and his point was to contrast children's fare of the 19th century with that of today. So, among other things, they also got to hear the theme song of Die Sendung mit der Elefant (don't listen unless you don't mind it getting in your head) and talk about what kids watch/read today. There is a big difference!
