1. I'm not actually working on revisions, seeing as my laptop has now gone to laptop heaven (er, well, I rather suspect it ended up in the Other, Hotter, Place, just like the rest of them), and if I mess with stuff in my backup files, it will only confuse issues. But it doesn't mean I can't browse over it when I'm taking a packing break. So, how often do you deliberately change facts when you're writing a novel? Say you want to be as absolutely accurate as possible, even if it's fiction, even if it's fantasy. Say that you need a scene to take place in June, but the setting really would be better done at a horse race instead of a garden party. Say that in real history, said horse race would only have taken place in February. Is it ever okay to just set the horse race in June, if you included an author's note to say that you changed it for the purposes of the story, even though you know that one bit is historically inaccurate?
2. My library card expires tomorrow. I turned everything in today. Sniff. I did hold out to finish The Mysterious Benedict Society, which I rather liked. Normally I have a harder time getting into midgrades--often instead of a single main character, the reader's interest is spread out over a group of MCs, which makes it harder for me to hook onto the MC in the first place. This was like that, but at the same time, there were so many questions to read on to find the answers to that I was sucked in. So I would recommend it!
3. I will miss living in a society of pedestrians. When everyone is on foot/public transit/outside, you really know, at least by sight, a very large number of people in your town. I had pleasant conversations with several people I know marginally that way today, reinforcing my general idea that people are nice all over the world.
4. I will not, however, miss sticky, rainy, mosquito-filled nights in a country that doesn't believe in window screens.
5. I will also not miss my washing machine, nor my earwiggy clothes drying racks. Saturday is the last day I'm doing laundry here--woohoo!!
Okay, brain sufficiently emptied, now I've got to go clean a shelf before the Lap Child wakes up.
