packing books/favorite chapters
Aug. 5th, 2008 02:08 pmMy kids are all peering out the window, watching for their East German/Australian/American/Irish friends to come over. They are moving to Australia for six months while dad does research (much like we've been doing here). The kids want to get together one last time before everyone leaves for opposite ends of the world.
In the meantime (until Junior wakes up and realizes--horrors!--that I've deposited him in his BED, that is), I'm packing up books. I managed to winnow out a few, but most of the ones I don't care about, someone else does. And as I pack I'm rereading my favorite chapters. Harry walking into the forest for the last time, meeting Dumbledore at "King's Cross" (Deathly Hallows), Polly finding Tom Lynn practicing for a concert just when all responsible adults have let her down (Fire and Hemlock), Catherine pushing Jason in his wheelchair through the parking lot (Rules), the deliciously word-rich first chapter of A Curse Dark as Gold, Vlad Tod dipping his chocolate chip cookies in a mug of blood (Eighth Grade Bites), Wanda watching the stars as everything goes black (or blue) (The Host), meeting Mr. Tumnus (The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe)... Isn't it lovely that so many people can have the same intensely personal experience with the same story without diminishing someone else's enjoyment of it or messing up their first time there? I'm so glad I live here and now, where I have the luxury of more books than I know what to do with.
What are some of your favorite chapters?
