All I know is that every single version I've tried of this chapter has FAILED. 100%.
When I start with action, people complain they don't have any feelings for the MC at all.
When I start with character, people yawn and say they hate knowing any back story.
Yes, I've tried working in the back story slowly, one drop at a time.
If the MC's motivations aren't clear in the beginning, the rest of it doesn't mean much. If you don't know what your MC wants most, you don't know why something is a threat. I know this.
It still isn't working.
I think I am just stupid. I'm going to go scrub the bathroom now.
