Okay, I have no willpower
Feb. 21st, 2008 01:08 pmBlame it on the fact that I woke up at 4:30 with a stuffy nose and thoughts of where we'll live next year and the accompanying moving stress. I really did try to get a certain book at the library. And since it was checked out and I figured I'd need it as a reference in the future, I really did need to go to the bookstore. They didn't have a copy, but the nice table that holds all the books by people I know was on the way. So of course I had to stop. So of course I had to buy Hugo Cabret. Like we need another 500-page book to move. But at 20 Euro for a picture book (it DID win the Caldecott, so that makes it a picture book, right?) you get a lot more for your money than you do with a 32-page picture book. Right? Besides, the German is ameliorated by the pictures. And my kids will like it. Really, it's an investment.
(Although I do have to agree with whoever it was who said that in some ways a book of pure text is more filling than a graphic novel. Don't shoot me, but I can climb inside a world of words and forget the medium much easier than I can in a graphic novel. Maybe it's just my familiarity or lack thereof with the medium. Or maybe it's because you can put more story/layers in with more words. Again, don't shoot me.)
