Saw it!

Yay! Finally, a night out with just my husband, and to see Harry Potter! (We've been out together for businessy things, but the last time WE got to choose the activity entirely for ourselves, DH ended up having an appendectomy instead. At least we had a prearranged babysitter.)

First time I've gone to a movie in Germany. We had to pay extra because 1) the movie was digital, not film, and 2) it was extra long. Weird, huh? DH thought the theater was like the one in Cinema Paradiso, only with like, cushier seats. Oh, and there were signs all over reminding us not to smoke (even in the previews--I don't think the anti-smoking rules have been around long), but open containers were fine. Actually, everyone in front of us went out and got a huge glass (yes, glass) of beer and slugged it during the film. And trotted out repeatedly to the bathroom.

Oh, yes, the film! Azkaban is still my favorite, but this one...this one was pretty good. There was a lot to condense here. Goblet was a long book because of descriptions; not that many separate things happened in it. But Phoenix just has a lot of stuff going on. The beginning especially rushed through a lot of scenes without giving the viewer much time to internalize it. I thought, in comparison to Goblet, that the individual scenes were tied together a whole lot better. However, also in contrast to Goblet, there wasn't time for much development/buildup within the scenes, if that makes sense. And there were a few things that went somewhat against the logic of the book (like Fred and George staging their fireworks display during OWLS). But overall, this film had heart, which is a huge pull in its favor, to me anyhow. Great relationship between Harry and Sirius. GREAT relationship with the trio. Really lovely. Radcliffe was great with Harry's emotions, and I really liked the whole newspaper theme. The big black and white banner of Fudge in the Ministry made me think of um, certain events in this country's history (and also the shrines to the secretary of state in certain states I've lived in which practically make you swear an oath of fealty to said person to obtain a drivers license.) Also, nice job with the stuff going on in Harry's mind, especially Harry's ultimate triumph. Really nicely handled.

Gotta see it in English, though. I missed some of Fred and George's lines. Overall, nice job on the dubbing, though. Hermione's voice comes off a little high, but the dubbers carried the emotion well, too; I hate when dubbing sounds like someone reciting lines. This was good.

TWELVE HOURS and I can read book 7!!!!!
