bookshelf meme
Feb. 20th, 2007 08:02 amI rarely do memes, but this one from
melissa_writing is about books, so I can't resist. Probably because most of my books are sitting in a cold, lonely storage shed in Michigan, and I miss them!
1. How do you organize your books? By genre, by last name, by title, by publication date?
By genre. We have a very large foreign language section in particular. Mine are the Spanish, Russian, Glagolitic, Uzbek, Welsh, Swedish, and Persian books. DH's are the German-in-all-its-dialects, Yiddish, Hebrew, Greek, Italian, French, Hittite, and Latin. I like living languages and he prefers the dead ones. We also have a poetry/literature section, a religion section, a handful of baby/child raising books we rarely consult (and which we usually end up throwing across the room b/c they don't have anything useful to say on the situation at hand), an art section, and a books on interesting places we've lived/visted. And of course, fiction, which is largely mine and largely children's. The kids have their picture books, but again, the ones on the living room shelves are mine.
2. Do you have a shelf reserved for your favorite books and/or authors?
Yes. The bookshelf is mine (mine! mine!) and it's where I keep YA books, favorite fantasy series, British golden age mysteries, and Russian literature. The fun books!
3. What is the first title and author on your bookshelf?
Right now we have only one bookshelf (sniff!), and the first book on it is Stephenie Meyer's New Moon. Normally the upper books are paperbacks, just for weight issues (don't want the shelf to topple on Small Child.)
4. What is the last title and author on your bookshelf?
Normally would be an opera encyclopedia or medical dictionary (ie, heavy book), but in this case it's So Lebten die Menschen Damals, by Dr. Anne Millard. (NF children's book with detailed illos on many ancient cultures. Goes beyond just the Greeks and Romans.)
5. What genre dominates your collection?
YA novels, usually with a fantastical element. And foreign languages.
6. Which author is the most represented?
At present in Germany I'd have to say Megan Whalen Turner. But within the complete collection...Rowling or Dorothy L. Sayers or CS Lewis
7. You own all of the books written by . . .
JK Rowling
8. You own the entire series of . . .
Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings (although I must admit my husband owns this--I'm definitely more of a Harry than a Frodo fan), the part of Sayers' Lord Wimsey books that involve Harriet Vane, Chronicles of Narnia, The Thief (MWT), and I used to have Prydain, too, but too many lendings means I only own about three of them now. Also, if we're counting nonfiction, then BH Roberts's The History of the Church, the What to Expect books (preganancy, baby, toddler) and the LDS canon of scripture (Bible, Book of Mormon, Doctrine & Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price).
And that is way more than you ever wanted to know about me. Thanks for visiting my bookshelves!
