I just finished Neal Shusterman's Everlost. I've been plowing through all these Christmas books, and while they're different from each other, and while I'm left thinking about them afterwards, with the others there's still been a bit more...resolution? No. Maybe the word is catharsis. Everlost has an interesting premise and a lot of twists and turns, and is a nicely-written book. But I can't help feeling somewhat unfinished. Maybe it's just the mood I'm in right now (reading to avoid thinking about all the many things I should be doing instead, only I'm feeling too overwhelmed). The basic premise is that there's a fatal accident, and Allie and Nick die. On their way down the tunnel towards the light, they knock against each other and knock themselves out of the tunnel into sort of a limbo land. And then there are adventures as they try to get home/where they're supposed to go. Thing is, while they *can* sleep, they don't have to (since they're dead). Also, standing still too long makes them sink into the earth, so they have to keep moving all the time. And if they aren't careful, they'll forget their names and who they are. So there's a great deal of restlessness in the book, and that's what's stuck in my mind. Not a bedtime book!
For a bedtime book I went back and ordered The Thief. The sequels are a bit too old (um, the hand thing?) for my 9-year-old, but I think he might enjoy The Thief. He LOVES to be read to, and I love to read aloud. It's even more fun, now that he's old enough to share reading tastes.
I'd like to get back in and write some more, but I'm having a hard time shaking the restless feeling, plus I do well when I take a day off sometimes. Sundays are pretty busy days, with everyone home, and it's a mix between chaoes, Uno and Scrabble games, music, and little girls jumping on the bed. Which is all fun, and sometimes writing needs to take a back seat. I'll be back for more tomorrow, no doubt.
