Christmas concert
Dec. 9th, 2006 09:46 pmIs this cool, or what? Tonight my oldest son had his elementary-school Christmas choir concert. In a church from the 1700s. Kids from 4 schools, an orchestra, and a full house. We're talking double balconies and huge pillars and gold-plated altars and a ceiling covered with murals and an Adventskranz (hanging advent wreath) big as a tire swing. And my kid got to be in the middle of this to sing! He had a fantastic time, and so did I. (FWIW, I was the only kid in my second grade class who wasn't allowed to sing in chorus because I didn't pass the tryouts.)
While we were waiting for it all to begin, I took my middle two kids outside on the church grounds to view the market stands. There's the regular Christmas market on the market square, but this was a medieval one. All the booths were tents, all the workers had on medieval garb, and there were even some "minstrels" singing from the medieval Top 40. There were some medieval games (shoot the apples with a crossbow) and some real stuff, too, like working bows and arrows, with hand-worked leather quivers going for some 170 Euros (a Euro is worth just a bit more than a dollar).
Germany is so cool.
