The crooked piece
Nov. 1st, 2006 07:39 pmEpiphany today. I just realized the right way to turn one of my puzzling characters so that he fits into the story right. He's always been there, but never quite...fit. I've tried removing him, and the plot collapses, but at the same time, his connection to the MC has been more or less like Los Angeles and the North American plate--sort of touching, but not quite fitting. But today, in the midst of working on emotional connections and bringing out the feelings my characters certainly do have but are shy to show, it hit me that he's actually a key to the MC's emotional journey.
It also helped that today was a holiday (All Saints) and so husband was home. Yesterday was definitely Halloween, with a warmish wind and fire-gold leaves raining down, and pumpkins and yellow asparagus blazing in the fields. We went to a Halloween party at the neighbors' apartment last night, which somewhat mollified our kids, who were horrified to learn that Germans don't celebrate Halloween. Well, they do a little, especially on the former US military base where we live (perhaps some American soldiers' ghosts are whispering "Trick or treat....!" through the walls?). But it's not a holiday for little kids. Trick or treaters tend to be at least 10-12, and mostly they're teens.
Today is definitely November, though. Most of the leaves blew away today, and steel gray clouds marched in to take their place. The wind screamed outside and just as I opened a window to take a picture of the few remaining golden leaves against the dark gray background, the sky let loose a volley of hail. We were tired enough from our recent trips that we didn't mind, though. We stayed inside and napped, listened to music, wrote, or made cake (okay, husband made cake--that's his thing). Lovely day.
